Minimalism for Renters; Having Less to Live More

Minimalism. The new lifestyle craze that’s slowly sweeping through Australia. What is it though, and why is it beneficial, especially for renters? Minimalism is all about living with less. The philosophy is to get rid of attachments to excessive possessions and focus on experiences and living life to the fullest. To some people, the concept of getting rid of a majority of their possessions is horrific, however, many people find it freeing and ultimately a better way of life. So, how can this way of life be beneficial for renters? Truth is, it’s more helpful than one would think…

The first is the most obvious; if you don’t have heaps of possessions weighing you down, moving is much easier. A downfall of being a renter is being at the mercy of your landlord. Not to say that you can be thrown out of your rental for no reason with minimal notice, but say your landlord wants to sell or even wants the property as their own personal abode, you may find yourself having to move before you’re ready to. If you keep your items to a minimum, with only essentials to make your home functional and comfortable to you, you’ll find less items to pack and shift. Easy!

Secondly, minimalism helps with furniture choices. The reality is, there is no point buying dwelling-specific items, or items just to fill the current place you’re living in. Finding a place to live should be about a place that fits your life, not your items. By living minimally, you know all of your items will fit the place that suits your lifestyle and needs. The key is to think simple and versatile when shopping for furniture.

Lastly is two words; financial minimalism. Obviously if you own less, you’re buying less. Yes, you may spend a little bit more when focusing on quality, but how much longer will a quality item last you? It’s also about considering location-specific purchases as well. For example, is it really responsible purchasing a 24-month membership for the local gym when you’re on a month-to-month lease? Owning less items, more quality and considering everything will, in the long run, save you more to enable you to live more.

Minimalism isn’t for everyone. It’s okay if you like stuff, and you feel like parting with a lot of it would cause stress rather than resolving it. However, if you find yourself renting and would rather spend you time concerned with more ‘life stuff’, consider how minimalism could help you.
