Going Green: Movable Gardens for Renters

For some people, one of the most relaxing and rewarding things is having and tending to a garden. However, when you’re renting, it can feel nearly impossible to do without disturbing the pre-existing garden. No need to fear, there are plenty of options for renters with green thumbs.

Recycling Polystyrene Boxes

Lightweight and inexpensive, polystyrene boxes are a fantastic option to start your own movable garden. You may even be able to pick up one or two from your local green grocer, if you ask! All you need to do is ensure there is proper drainage at the bottom, then start planting. These are great for planting and growing a range of items, from leafy greens to tomatoes.

Plastic Pots

Plastic pots are a great option, as they are easily accessible and are an option for indoor and outdoor gardening. They are lighter than your typical terracotta or ceramic pots, and are a lot easier to move with as they aren’t as prone to breaking. Plus, you can always hide the plastic by popping them into a nicer pot.

Hessian Sack Spuds

Want some home-grown potatoes and tomatoes in your life? Hessian sacks are the answer! Simply just fill the sacks with soil and compost, then find a nice sunny place where your veggies will thrive. This is a super versatile way of creating a little veggie patch that is still movable and suitable for renters.

Mobile Garden Beds

Mobile raised garden beds are perfect for any renters, as you can grow an array of plants without disturbing the pre-existing garden. They are easy enough to find at a local nursery, or even online.

When it comes to gardening in a rental, the best advice is to keep things simple. Use solutions that are easy to use and move. Even with limited space both indoors and outdoors, it’s still possible to have the garden your green thumb desires. If all else fails, remember there are always community gardens, as they are a great way to connect with like-minded people, while doing what you love.
